How Takata Air Bag Recalls Affects Nigeria

Nigeria is a major market for second hand America automobile which means we have some vehicle owners in Nigeria affected by this major air bag recall.

The already record-breaking rate of automotive recalls this year shows no signs of slowing down, especially since millions of cars with defective airbags made by global supplier Takata are under ongoing scrutiny.

The US government’s auto safety agency is now warning 7.8 million car owners that inflator mechanisms in the air bags can rupture, causing metal fragments to fly out when the bags are deployed. The faulty air bags have already been blamed for THREE deaths.

How do you know if YOUR vehicle is safe? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an updated list of vehicles under recall. Unfortunately, the government’s website hasn’t been working at times today, and its list still contains errors.

Nissan spokesperson Steve Yaeger advises Autoblog that the 694,626-unit figure is correct, but some of the model years are incorrect. The Sentra should also include some 2004-2006 models in high-humidity regions, and the same goes for the 2006 Infiniti M35/45.

The entry for Chrysler may also be incorrect, notes the Auburn Hills automaker. According to a statement sent to Autoblog by Chrysler Group, “Currently there is insufficient data to support a defect finding in Chrysler Group vehicles,” but it’s investigating with NHTSA. The full statement is below.

Autoblog also spoke with BMW spokesperson Julian Arguelles, who maintains that the the entry for the German brand is 11,000 units too high because the company is replacing the driver and passenger inflators on some models. NHTSA’s list double counts them.

Below is the list of models covered by recalls that date back to 2013 as released by NHTSA. Some recalls are nationwide and some are limited to coastal areas. We’ve also included links to the manufacturers’ recall websites.
