The Most Hilarious Names Nigerians Give to Cars


This is an article from the incoming Nigerian car Magazine; Carvolution scheduled for release by the 4th week of May 2018.

Nigerians have been known to rechristen their favourite cars local names which are usually renewed every generation or midlife refresh of the cars. Practically all cars (excuse my exaggeration) have a local name given to it. Some names like “ Honda Baby boy” are prominent in the South, some others like “Panadol extra” are prominent in the North but a few of them like the “End of discussion” and “Evil spirit” have managed to gain popularity all over the country. We made a research about this topic and compiled a list based on our results.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon review


If you could only drive one car every day for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good answers here, Porsche 911, Range Rover. I can even get behind a more frugal choice like the delightful little Volkswagen GTi. But following a week with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon -- a 603-horsepower station wagon -- I might have found my new go-to answer.
2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon 
It really hauls
Mercedes' 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 is one of my favorite engines. Its brute force is complemented by a robust growl, and the combination makes for the most muscular attitude of all the current German V8s.
In a play to the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere, Mercedes shoves that big engine into its E-Class wagon, where it's good for a staggering 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. With a 9-speed automatic transmission sending that power to all four wheels, this 4,700-pound station wagon can sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds. That's a hair quicker than Merc's insane AMG GT R, meaning supercar acceleration in family hauler form.
Of course, the E63 Wagon isn't just about straight-line speed. Yes, it'll rocket off the line with tremendous authority, the transmission firing off quick upshifts with assertive precision. But throw it into a turn and the whole car hunkers down, the 265/35-series Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires providing incredible grip, the traction control strict enough to keep everything copacetic, but not so castrating that it won't allow for a little bit of playful slip.

Behold the E63 Wagon's glorious 4.0-liter heart. This sweet, sweet V8 produces 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

The E63 S Wagon's multi-chamber air suspension uses continuously variable damping, with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings. Comfort strikes the best balance for daily driving, but along the canyon roads north of Los Angeles, Sport and Sport+ don't stiffen the ride so much to upset the superb balance, or worse, make the wagon jittery over rough pavement. Mercedes' Dynamic Select toggle on the center console lets the driver switch between a similar suite of driving modes -- Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual or Race -- and during the sort of back-road blasting I'm enjoying during a warm California afternoon, Sport+ really strikes the best balance. It keeps the 4.0-liter engine on boil all the time, and the mode-specific transmission mapping is perfectly matched to my aggressive behavior. Back on the freeway, Comfort still offers enough gusto to remind you that this is a super-fast AMG. And if you aren't driving this thing with the active sport exhaust open at all times, well, you're doing it wrong.
Good as the engine and chassis are, they're matched with nicely weighted (though ever so slightly numb) steering and brakes are powerful enough to promptly halt you from ludacris speeds. The wagon doesn't feel quite as naturally tail-frisky as the AMG E63 S Sedan, but I'll chalk that up to the 184-pound weight penalty, all of which is situated over the rear axle. Otherwise, it's the same raucous, hellaciously fun driving experience you'd expect from something with an AMG 63 badge. The wagon even gets the E63 sedan's ridiculous Drift Mode. Wee!

No, really, it hauls
Every version of the E-Class is incredibly spacious and comfortable, with proper seating for four adults (or five, if you must). The wagon adds to that versatility with a capacious boot, one that'll carry 35 cubic feet of cargo with the rear bench upright, or a healthy 64 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.
Unfortunately, the E400 wagon's optional rear-facing jump seats don't carry over to AMG E63 duty. If you were hoping you could still get away with buying an E63 wagon while simultaneously fulfilling your seven-passenger seating needs, I like where your head's at, but you'll have to look elsewhere.
The E63 S Wagon is really a great alternative to a traditional five-passenger high-performance SUV (however "traditional" that may be). Consider, by comparison, Mercedes' own AMG GLE63 S. It costs about $3,000 more to start, but offers 3 more cubic feet of space with its rear seats erect, or an additional 16 cubic feet with the bench folded flat. That said, it's also heavier, less powerful, handles worse and doesn't look half as cool. Very important things to consider, friends.

The E-Class' interior is already superb, with great design, high-quality materials and loads of tech. AMG-specific steering wheel and seats do nothing to upset that loveliness.

Comfortable and full of tech
The new E-Class' interior is wonderful, though it's perhaps at its best in AMG form. The slim AMG Performance seats are as comfortable as they are supportive, though they're also a $2,500 option. Open-pore wood accents and real aluminum trim match the rich leather appointments, and every single surface is both beautiful to behold and excellent to touch.
While baseline E-Class models can be had with a set of fixed gauges and one large infotainment display, the AMG E63 S Wagon only comes with the full-width, dual-screen setup. That means you get a pair of 12.3-inch high-res displays housed in one long screen that spans the width of the instrument panel and center dashboard, using the same Mercedes' COMAND interface that's found in lesser E-Class models (as well as the CLS- and S-Class sedans). I'm so ready for MBUX and its touchscreen functionality to proliferate the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup, but in the meantime, COMAND is mostly fine. The displays are huge and bright, not to mention reconfigurable, and must-haves like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are standard.
These matte black 20-inch wheels are a $1,700 option.
How I'd spec it
As you'd expect, the nearly $107,000 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon already comes with a pretty solid list of standard equipment. But surprisingly, a lot of features -- namely driver's aids -- are still à-la-carte choices.
While I love the Dakota Brown exterior color (brown wagons, you guys), I have to go for Piedmont Green, a $720 add-on. Then, I'm adding the 20-inch matte black wheels seen on my test car ($1,700), the Advanced Lighting Package ($1,500) and AMG Night Package to black out some of those chrome elements ($750). I am absolutely not paying $450 for the stupid illuminated star. Inside, I want the Nut Brown/Black interior with aluminum accents (no cost), the $1,050 Warmth & Comfort package (heated everything) and the $2,500 AMG Performance seats. Finally, I'll take the $3,600 AMG Premium Package, which is a lot of money, but includes blind spot assist, lane change assist, Distronic adaptive cruise control, active braking assist, the surround-view camera, lane-keeping tech and a lot more. Oh, sorry, one more thing: I want the $1,250 AMG Performance Exhaust. Because loud.
All in, I'm spending $119,965 on my AMG E63 S Wagon, including $995 for destination. That's a lot of money, to be sure, but really, not as much as I was expecting.

You could buy a fast SUV, or you could buy something much cooler instead.
Like (almost) nothing else
Despite America's huge appetite for SUVs and crossovers, it's nice to see more and more automakers embracing the station wagon. There are a lot to choose from these days, with varying sizes and price points. But in the case of the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon, it essentially exists in a class of two.
Porsche will happily sell you a Panamera Sport Turismo, and it's damn good. But if you want one with AMG-battling performance, you're looking at the Turbo Sport Turismo, which starts at $154,000, or about $47,000 more than the E63 S Wagon.
Not that the Merc's $106,950 starting price is any kind of bargain, mind you, nor is the roughly $130,000 as-tested price of the example you see here. You could buy a BMW X5M, Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR or the aforementioned Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S for around the same money, but why? The E63 S is nicer inside, still has the four-season friendliness of all-wheel drive, seats just as many people with great comfort and will carry almost as much cargo.
You can have one car every day for the rest of your life. Is it going to be a super cool (and super rare) station wagon, or just another SUV?

10 Nigerian Racing Events to Expect in 2018

2018 NIGERIAN MOTORSPORT CALENDER

2017 was a beautiful year for motorsport in Nigeria. It witnessed the beginning of a new dawn as we finally got a track and a home to indulge in our favourite sport (www.motorsportraceway.com). We witnessed the entry of new organizations that made considerable impact within 12 months and the absence of some long running events. 2017 started very slowly, picked up steam mid-year and looking back at the year, it was all worth it. Below is a review of 2017 and the motorsport calendar for 2018.




1. THE BIKERS TROPHY (The BT) & SERIES: The 5th edition of The BT 2017 that was held on the 25th of November 2017 was a huge success with the launch too of Nigeria’s first racetrack (www.motorsportraceway.com). Now in its 6th year, the annual flagship & premier motorsport event in West Africa return for 2018 with the introduction of The BT Qualifying Series. Scheduled to hold in the last weekends of the Months of February, May & August, The BT Series is the process through which racers in the 600cc & 1000cc Categories of the Superbike Race Championship that will hold, as traditional, on the last Saturday of November which is the 24th of November 2018. The Organisers of The BT have tagged the 2018 edition “The Mother of All BT”.  It CANT be missed!

2. THE ROADX RACE SERIES: The RoadX  Race Series is a team based BMW E30/Mercedes Benz 190 car racing series and is scheduled to begin in February 2018. Eight (8) races are planned for the 2018 Season that sees its Championship also decided at The BT in November. Already 12 teams are registered to take part in the Series. Highlights of the race series are expected to form regular TV content for Motorsport fans in West Africa. 3. THE EASTER STUNTBIKE SHOW & DRAG RACE: A new addition to the Nigeria Motorsport Calendar for 2018 is the Easter StuntBike Show & Drag Race at The Motorsport Raceway Evbuobanosa (MRE). This year’s edition is scheduled to take place on April 1st 2018. To register to take part in this event, register here

4. ONDO AUTO RALLY:
Organized by Work and play events. They came into the scene in 2017 with Sagamu Auto Rally in May and Ondo Auto Rally in November. The Ondo Auto Rally was a fun event which included road and off-road races with prize monies for the winners. The organizers have decided to concentrate all resources towards having only one race (Ondo Auto Rally) for the 2018 motorsport year.  We have confirmation from Work and Play that Ondo Auto Rally will take place in November 2018.

5. THE ROADX UNVEIL:  The RoadX Unveil event aims to showcase new teams, new drivers, new colours and new team sponsors in the RoadX Race Series for the next racing season. The 2017 event was a hit and we expect an even better showcase of The RoadX Teams at The Unveil in October 2018.

6. ELEKO MOTOR RACE:
Eleko Motor Race didn’t hold in 2017 but the organizers have confirmed a 2018 edition for the racing event. We have missed off-roading along the Lagos coastal line of Lagos and we can’t wait to do it again.

7. DRIFT LEAGUE 5:
Drift League 4 was organized by Darkknight Motorsports in Abuja on 1st December 2017 after months of driver training and it was another successful event. The 2017 edition witnessed attendance of quite a number of Lagos drift lovers which signals a good sign of cooperation within the motorsport community. We expect the 2018 edition to also take place in December.

8. THE RACETRACK CHALLENGE: The racetrack challenge is planned as a Reality TV themed car racing competition. The idea is to also take motorsports to the grassroots by identifying hidden talents and giving them the opportunity to enjoy their passion.  Auto garages looking to key into the motorsport value chain are also expected to take part in the project. Track used BMW E30 cars will be given to garages to prepare and make race ready with a budget cap. Selected drivers from the audition to be held in Lagos, Abuja & Benin City in February 2018 will then be sequentially eliminated to get the Final Five Contestants to race against each other to win The Race Track Challenge. Expect scenes from the RaceTrack Challenge on your screens in the 2nd Quarter of 2018. The Race Track Challenge is expected to run as a TV Series & we hope for a successful 1st Edition. 9. REVS AND RUNWAY:
Lagos drift kings Mach Motorsports didn’t disappoint in 2017 after coming into the scene in 2016. They basically upped the game from a smaller location into Tafawa Balewa Square which has a much wider space for drifting, they also did a good job infusing a runway show into the event.  Revs and Runway also witnessed the presence of Abuja Drift drivers including. It’ll be awesome to have a collaboration between Mach Motorsports and Darkknight Motorsports in 2018.

10. BMW DRAGFEST 2018: Just after we had settled down to take a look back at 2017, BMW Club Nigeria surprised us with the Xmas Autofest. The show was action packed with drag races from beginning to the end involving cars and bikes, a perfect way to end the year if you ask me. Before the end of the event, they announced that there will be 4 drag races to be held in the city of Lagos in 2018. We surely are anxious. BMW Club is yet to reply our mail of inquiry into the event dates.
Outlook: Unknown

What Most People Don't Know About Nigerian Superbike Riders

In the wake of Yusuf Buhari’s motorcycling accident, there has been a trail of condemnation of superbike riders, and the practice of riding superbikes, with an article published on the website of Businessday Online on 31st December 2017 (Refer here: http://www.businessdayonline.com.ridder.co/dZYZ5Q), citing Yusuf’s accident as proof for the need for strict regulation on super bikes.

While it is unfortunate that it had to take the president of Nigeria’s son to be involved in an accident before a national spotlight is shed on the world of Nigeria’s super biking community, there is a positive side to this world of motorcycling and this should be taken into consideration before passing judgement.



Just as there are reckless riders, we also have reckless motorists, but more often than not, motorbike accidents are met with less sympathy than car accidents, with a larger percent of the blame being heaped on the rider, even before a proper analysis or a valid eyewitness account is provided.

In January 2011, news of Tonye Claude-Wilcox’s death was broadcast all over the Internet. He had been riding his superbike from Lagos enroute to Calabar, when he met with an accident. Most blogs/sites described what happened as a collision between his bike and a vehicle, but one thing was missing - the fact that the vehicle that collided with the late Tonye’s bike was on the wrong side of the road, and coming in the opposite direction, or as we say, driving “one-way”.



Ogbonnaya Kanu, a chemical engineer, and renowned adventure motorcyclist was present when the accident happened. “When I saw Tonye thrown up in the air after the impact, I knew he wasn’t going to survive it. I carried my friend in my arms, and watched as his life slipped away, and there was nothing I could do about it. It’s an image that stays with me till this day.”

In the case of late Fred Omame, Kanu was also present at the Lagos Island General Hospital where Fred was brought in by the Lagos Ambulance Service, following the accident which had occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge. “Fred was still conscious when he was  brought to the hospital, conscious enough to tell us that a woman in a red car, who had tried to overtake a bus in the middle lane, rammed into his rear and drove off. Fred was on the ‘slow’ lane, while she had crossed from the fast lane. Unfortunately, there was another vehicle parked along the ‘shoulder’ of the bridge, and Fred, who was already on the ground with his bike, slid into the stationery vehicle,” says Kanu.



Fred passed on over a year later of his injuries and as is the norm, news of his death was met with the usual disdain for superbike riders, along with the general perception that superbike riders are rich, irresponsible and reckless, except that in this case it was a “Hit and Run”.

Kanu and a friend realised that they needed to do something to keep their fellow riders safe and to help them be better road users. They set up the Ride Easy Superbike Training School, located in Ikeja.
Kanu is currently the highest certified riding instructor in Nigeria, having completed Probike UK’s Motorcycle Instructor Training - Levels 1 and 2 - at the California Superbike School, UK; Levels 1 and 2 GS BMW Off-Road Skills, and Lee Parks Total Control Level 1.

The Ride Easy Motorcycling Club, one of the foremost motorcycling clubs in Nigeria , and of which Kanu is a member, even brought in an international riding instructor from Canada to give Advanced Rider Tactics training to its club members.



There are other motorcycling training schools spread across the country, which are not funded by government, yet, doing their best to impart safe motorcycling practices to their students.

In recent years, the biking community in Nigeria has grown to encompass a large group of men and women in various professions, who are united by the passion they share for motorcycling, whilst adhering to a uniform code that promotes safety, honour and integrity.

Investment banker, Kwesi Amanor-Boadu lends credence to that code. “Motorbikes are machines like every other form of transportation. The person operating the machine is responsible for all eventualities. My safety and the safety of other road users is important all the time. This is the ethos of the well trained and oriented Rider. One crazy car driver does not make all drivers bad same with motorbikes,” he says.



Perhaps the pending actions would be to set up proper licensing procedures, much like what obtains for motorists, where superbike riders are required to undergo rider training from accredited riding schools and  be properly evaluated before being licensed to ride, along with their own set of rules of regulations, such as wearing the right gear.

There is also a need to shed more light on the efforts at positive impact that the biking community makes towards the society, so that others may be encouraged to ride in the same vein.

Take for example Ryker’s Ride, a biker fundraising and awareness ride started by super biker and engineer, Paul Lawson. Ryker’s Ride unites the African Biker Nation to support and highlight the work of children’s charities, such as the SOS villages, and also highlight the plight and educational needs of the less privileged child in West Africa.



In an interview with Pride Nigeria magazine, Lawson explains how the ride benefits the children. “The awareness the ride brings to the work the homes and villages do for the orphaned, and destitute children, helps them raise funds and sponsors to help more children. A lot of people did not know they could make a difference or that such homes existed, and several others have been challenged, because we came so many miles to help children in their towns. We have reports from some of the homes we visited that bikers and other people have been coming to support them and donate stuff since we visited.”



There is also the Fotodadi Foundation, co-founded by Ogbonnaya Kanu and Segun Obagun in 2015, and which was set up in memory of Tonye Claude-Wilcox and Wemba Otike-Odibi - both riders. The foundation awards scholarships to disadvantaged fatherless and orphaned children from primary through to first-degree level. Bikers also constitute a majority of the donor base. The uniqueness of the FD Foundation lies in the fact that as long as beneficiaries are able to meet the criteria set by the foundation, their fees will continue to be paid till they graduate from university.

The Biker’s Trophy (BT) marked its fifth year of existence in 2017. The BT is Nigeria’s premier motorsport event, which takes place annually in Edo state. In previous years, the race took place on a closed public road through the supporting villages of Urhonigbe, Uromehe, Evbonogbon, Obazagbon, Umughun, Ogba, Ugo, Egbokor and Ugbokirima in Orhiomwon Local Government Area of Edo State. The 2017 edition saw the race taking place on the first purpose-built racetrack at Evbuobanosa, Near Abudu, Edo State.


Tough Tourers is a recently launched platform that provides riders with a well structured opportunity to engage in long distance motorcycling, and honours them for their motorcycling achievements. It also promotes tourism, as the tours involve riding to a variety of locations in Nigeria.

In other parts of the country, different motorcycling clubs engage in various acts of charity, caring for their communities, as they try to make a difference.
The development of motorcycling in Nigeria has also brought employment and business opportunities, such as the establishment of motorbike workshops and rider training schools, sales of motorcycle spare parts and gears.



Time and again, it has been proved that people fear what they do not understand, and with superbike riding being a relatively new development to most Nigerians, topmost on most people’s minds are the inherent risks involved in engaging in the sport.

With time, we hope that this will change, and that people will understand that riders have chosen - in the words of a leading motorcycle manufacturers slogan - to MAKE LIFE A RIDE.
